Assignments for next week -- 9th and 11th

1. Come up with a working thesis for your Hamlet essay and bring it (typed on a piece of paper -- not hovering around in your brain) to class on Tuesday.
2. Be prepared to perform your memorized soliloquy on Tuesday or Thursday
3. Be prepared for an objective test on Hamlet on Thursday
4. Write the Hamlet essay. Caveat: It is technically due on the day before the holiday. However, you may turn it in the first day of class after the holiday if you simply cannot complete a polished articulate essay before then and I will not zing your grade for doing so.

I’m having a hard time making my theses good. I’m not really sure which one is better because they both kind of suck. I like the topic of the first one, but I’m not sure how to make it strong. HELP!

1)Shakespeare’s Hamlet is full of characters who play false roles and are sole pretenders. The theme of appearance and reality is very important in developing the central message and is one of the most important themes in the play.

Or

2)Although Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are relatively minor characters in Hamlet, they add many elements to Hamlet and are important in the play. Not only do they help establish the theme of appearance and reality, but they also reveal Hamlets brutality and establish some dramatic elements.

Michelle, to your first thesis:

The contrast of appearance and reality is utilized convincingly(wc) by Shakespeare in the development of his central message. (Now tell the reader what the central message is and why the contrast is so important to it)

You'd need to develop the 'central message' more clearly, but I thought I'd help you out a bit.

Did anyone else hit a wall with like 5 lines left to memorize in the soliloquy? I was doing awesome, and then the last 5 lines just made me kind of sick thinking about.

Well, best of luck on that to all of you! I will see you bright and early!
