I REALLY wish I could have gone!
Also, Natalie, I noticed you showed great "restraint" in posting last on Monday's blog.

The Triumvirate welcomes you! "The term triumvirate (from Latin, "of three men") is commonly used to describe a political regime dominated by three powerful individuals" (Wiki).

Hahaha...I didn't this time! First one again woohoo!!!
Yay Natalie! :)... well, I guess second isn't too bad =P
This was my first time attending an opera, and I really liked it. I thought the plot was great, but not overly complex. I was surprised that there was dialogue in between the arias; I thought operas only had songs. I liked the humor in the songs between the daughter, Marzelline and Jacquino, the assistant. The singing and acting were good too.
However, it was obvious they didn't have actual German accents, which made it less realistic and not as fun. I didn't like that the setting was in modern times: Fidelio/Leonore's revolver and the 2 guys in black who carry away the Commandant looked like something from a modern action movie, and it seemed comical actually. Also, I thought the overtures (orchestra playing before each act) were too long.
All in all, though, it was a good experience!
The modern setting did seem awkward. At the last scene where all the towns’ people gathered I was surprised to see a cameraman and a news reporter. My favorite part was when the prisoners were let out to enjoy the sunshine. The music for that section had a strong emotion in it.
I agree with what the others have said. The opera was good overall, but i think it was too modernized. Also, I thought that the accents of the actors wasn't too genuine. But it was a good experience overall.
Diya explained it perfectly. Not what I expected at all. I tried my best to appreciate it :(
What exactly is the assignment?
I'm not sure about the quality of the opera. The orchestra was brilliant, I would have enjoyed the music greatly had there been no opera over it. However, the people's voices and the modern setting did a lot to take away from it. Since it is my first opera I am not sure what to compare it to, but as Mr. Hardin mentioned that he was sorry this had to be our first opera, I assume the others will be significantly better than this one.
